Just to set you straight on Star Wars:
The budget was around ?10M, not particularly high. ?1M of that was from Lucas' own pocket.
Now, I am going to sound like a bloody anorak here, but Star Wars is more than just entertainment, it works on many levels.
Lucas wanted to create a modern myth. He succeeded.
Ever heard of Joseph Campbell? Hero's journey, a thousand faces and all that. Well that is more than 'entertainment' is was inspirational to the spirituality of Star Wars.
Did you ever wonder about The Force as a kid? Well it's very similar to some eastern philosphies that have helped shape my own outlook on life.
In all, Star Wars caught me at exactly the right age - whoever says that cinema/TV does not affect people are talking crap, because that's the whole point.
That is why I think The Phantom Menace, a pile of shite to a seasoned film-maker, will mature in the eyes of the 5 - 10 year olds who went to see it. They will have a certain affinity for it, much as the generation inbetween has an affinity for those stupid Ninja Turtles that had kids kicking the shit out of each other in the playground.
To me, Star Wars was a form of religion as a kid. It's served me well through information rather than control.
I pity the kids hooked on Pokemon who are learning that they must capture, control and battle.
"You create your own reality through your own believes and desires"
Those believes and desires must start with a frame of reference. For many that is the cinema.
Vebronto: What? Expound please.
